Barn Quilts – A Closer Look, Part 2
Let’s take a look at a few more of the beautiful creations inspired by the Barn Quilt Project QUILTING Challenge.
Quilter: Gock’s Frocks
Little Barn by the Beach
Both the block and the project must have a name. It is OK for the name of each to be the same, but it is not necessary.
so... I put on my thinking cap ... as usual, I could not make a regular quilt but had to "think outside the box" as Kim suggested....
I love barns and I love barn quilts but since we spend more of our near the lake I decided to put a nautical spin on my the barn quilt block in my design.
Name: Little Barn by the Beach
barn quilt name: signal flags
created in Rochester NY
size 18"x18"
I used the first letter of each of our names, K,P,L,E and the signal flags that represent each letter to create a "barn block"
I decided to make a wonky barn/house block incorporating the barn quilt on the front of the barn. I have long loved the wonky house blocks I have seen on flickr .... then I realized that I had 1 afternoon to get my project done as we were heading out of town for a long weekend! Originally I was going to make a small quit for the wall but as I played with colors and fabrics I decided this block would make a perfect pillow for my sons newly redecorated room! He is also my sailor so the signal flags are right up his alley!
I did not have my good machine with the walking foot to quilt this so the quilting was not as fancy as I might have tried but I had fun with it anyways! spikes for the grass, boards on the barn, shingles for the roof, swirls in the sky ....and best of all...he loves it!

Firefly Barn Quilt
Growing up in the deep South, and living most of my adult life in the West, I don't have a whole lot of experience with barn quilts, but did see a few when we lived in Michigan. I Google'd many images and got an idea of what they are. The ones I saw are very "traditional", and primarily use solid (paint) colors.
There are many traditional quilt blocks that I love, and many that mean something to me for various reasons (the "Louisiana" quilt block, "Oregon Trail", "Greek Cross"). Making a simple quilt block just didn't really seem "creative", so I looked at it from another angle. I tried to envision what we'd have on a barn, if we owned one, and almost immediately a firefly came to mind. We've had "firefly" in some form or another in our family email address since our very first AOL dial-up account, back in the 90's. I started searching for "firefly quilt blocks", and came up with nothing really, so I decided to make my own.
I used a traditional 6 by 6 grid (a 9 patch variation) and played around with it until I came up with a design I liked, and sewed up the block. It's 24 inches by 24 inches.
Since It's a simple design, I decided to use some fun quilting to make it a bit more interesting. My machine has been cooperating lately, and I'm pretty happy at how it all came out.

Quilt Barn
It's a quilt that is a barn, not a barn that has a quilt on it...it also has a barn quilt on each side! How do you like my new sewing machine cover? I recently read that you should keep your machine covered to reduce dust getting in it, so now I have a pretty way to do that.
I was inspired by photos of beautiful red barns and their barn quilts on "The Barn Quilts of Grundy County Iowa", the one in particular belonged to Kylene Luchsinger and Beverly Butler. I quilted it to match the boards of that barn and the clean white trimmed windows.
Most Barn quilts are painted and hung, so that's what I did for my little barn quilts. I painted white fabric squares before piecing them into little quilts that I hung on each side of the barn. My sewing machine is seen from both sides, so I chose to give each side a nice barn quilt.

Broken Dishes
I was inspired by this barn quilt near one of our favorite vacation spots, also in my home state of MI. This is the first time I've worked with triangles and found it was a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be. I used a new pattern to make a "pocket style" hotpad. I changed the pattern to incorporate the barn quilt pattern (and will do it differently next time!). In the process of working with it, I found it also worked great as a little sewing pack to hold my thread, seam ripper, etc. and also makes a great pin cushion! There are 9 layers of fabric/batting through this! I put a layer of warm and natural on either side of insular-bright, which I used for the first time also. I broke a couple needles on this one! I had fun playing with these fabrics and making these quilted 4-triangle squares. I quilted each one with its own unique pattern. Thanks for this challenge!

Barn Quilt Challenge on Point
This is a 12" square candle mat that is called The Christmas Star. It is made from stash, so no expense was involved. I thought how nice this would be on a barn during the Christmas Holidays - especially whose owner sells Christmas Trees!
This on-point version is especially nice and gives it a whole different look.
This project was made in Tucson, AZ
