It’s Where I Live – A Closer Look, Part 1
Let’s start taking a closer look at all the amazing pieces created for the ‘It’s Where I Live’ Project QUILTING Challenge.
Quilter: ForQuiltsSake
Yellow Strings Journal Cover
Made by Pam Geisel of For Quilts Sake in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Mar. 2012 for Project Quilting Season 3, Challenge 5, It's Where I Live.
6" x 9”
My creative process and how I made it:
My street starts with an "R", my city a "Y" and my state an "O." The obvious choices are Red, Yellow and Orange.
I live in Yellow Springs, Ohio, a small artsy town surrounded by farmland and nature preserves between Dayton and Columbus. The use of "Yellow" in my quilt is an obvious nod to our town.
Our town is named after a ground-fed spring located in Glen Helen Nature Preserve. The spring has a high iron content which looks more orange than it does yellow, so I included more shades of orange than yellow in this project.
We are also home to Antioch College and the Antioch Writers Workshop plus many My project would be a cover for a blank, unlined journal, something that a writer or artist would use.
Another of the artsy features in our town is that some of the local fiber artists have been "Yarn Bombing" the trees, telephone poles, street signs and basically anything that doesn't move. I wanted to honor these women so I couched some red-orange-yellow variegated yarn to the front of the journal cover.
I've titled this journal cover "Yellow Strings." The back of the cover doesn't have yarn on it but shows off the lovely gradation of the colors.

Project Quilting #3-5
I tried several sketches and kept coming back to our Barn Quilt assignment. So decided to stick to simple bold graphics for one more quilt. I live on Maple St, Sycamore, IL so went with
"M"aize
"S"carlet
"I"ndigo
This is 15" square and at this very moment in time - the arrows show me where I am - right here!!!

rose table runner
Rose Table Runner, 13" x 38". Made for Project Quilting Challenge 5 - It's Where I Live. For this challenge I chose 2 things that could be associated with Kentucky, which is where I live. I used roses because the Kentucky Derby is often called the Run for the Roses. And I used log cabin blocks because Abraham Lincoln's childhood home is a log cabin located in Kentucky. Both the roses and the background blocks are log cabins, although not in exactly the traditional style. The challenge specified that the colors must start with the first letter of your street, city, and state. My letters were P, A, and K so I chose pink, aqua, and kiwi as my colors. This quilt was pieced and partially quilted in Kentucky and finished in Michigan while I was there visiting. This challenge may be my favorite one yet., especially the extra twist about picking the colors.

Patio Stone
This is my project for the Where I Live Challenge. I ended up with C - D - I for letters and needing a bit more color choices than I could think of I looked up Wikipedia's List of Colors - Oh Wow there are colors for EVERYTHING! I really wanted to use Corn since I live in DeKalb, IL which has lots of corn around here. And I loved the name Drab and Denim and of course Dollar Bill even. Then for the I my heart was set on Inchworm which is a pale green. However, not having any soft greens to use for inchworm I settled on Indian Red, I went with Daffodil because then I got to use three shades of my yellows and then the C ended up with Chocolate because that gave me two fabrics in my stash one looking like milk/dark chocolate and other looking like white/milk/dark chocolate colors. I chose to make a patio stone with a bright flower on it. I have the most wonderful garden yard and it really is lovely, it has many bricks and patio stones and it does have daffodils it also had giant sunflowers at the end of the summer last year. And I like using the Indian Red because I think that by end of summer my garden is at it's peak and of course the tomatoes are ripe too! I kept the quilting simple with in the ditch with clear thread and I used a pillowcase finish for it which was my first time doing that and think I'll be using that technique again.
Size ended up 10.5x10.5
More closer looks coming soon!
