I’m absolutely LOVING how this quilt is coming together!  It’s everything I imagined it would be and MORE (yes, cliché but true!)  We have ANOTHER block today (and two more next week, a few bonuses, and some more sashing – and finally a beautiful quilt)!  I’m really happy to introduce you to the sweet and talented, Melissa Stramel of Lilac Lane – the designer of today’s block.  


  
What is your crafting style?
I'm not sure I adhere to just one style. When I see something, I know if it's me. My friends can tell you if it's me. Lots of times my local quilt shop will say, I knew you would love this. In general, it has to be very feminine (I LOVE flowers), pink or red or turquoise, sometimes yellow, vintage feeling, and sometimes scrappy.

How did you get started creating?
Hmm. I remember sewing a little pillow with my mom when I was three.  I still have that pillow. 4-H was a huge influence in my life as well. It exposed me to almost all of the arts, including quilting, photography, baking and canning, counted cross stitch, gardening and painting.

Do you have a favorite piece? Why is it your favorite?
I have a favorite that I can't show. Stay tuned! But my favorite I can show is called the Road to Redemption.  I combined a pattern called the Fruit of the Spirit and one called Praying the Names of Jesus. I love this – it's VERY me!
What is your favorite crafty blog to follow/read?
Oh there's so many, but I never turn down a new post from Jennifer Paganelli. www.sisboom.com
She has such gorgeous inspiration and her fabric is completely my style.
Which part of the creating process does you like the most? Planning! I can hardly sleep when I think of a new idea. I also love finishing. :)
Which part of the creating process do you dislike the most? As a pattern designer, possibly typing up the pattern. Which I don't hate! It just keeps me away from the sewing machine.
Favorite Adhesive: Does Wonder Under count?
Favorite Movie: The original version of The Parent Trap. You just can't beat Haley Mills.
Beverage of Choice: Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice Tea.
Sweet or Salty? Sweet. My husband says I have four sweet teeth!
Number 1 on your Bucket List: A published book! And it's coming out very soon.

Home Sweet Home Quilt Along

I’m also currently running a really fun Quilt Along where each block has to have either a tree, a house, or both incorporated into the block design.  16 block tutorials will be posted by different quilters by the time this quilt along is complete.  12 are already up but it wouldn’t take too long to catch up  - AND in the end you’ll have an adorable, whimsical house and tree quilt to cherish.

Happy Thursday everyone!  I don’t know about you but I am SO happy we had an extra day in February this year.  I can’t even start to begin to tell you about all the things I crammed into yesterday – whew! 


Anyway, now that it’s March, it’s time for me to introduce you to the Home Sweet Home Quilt Along Block 10 Designer – Michele Foster of the Quilting Gallery.   She was nice enough to fill out a little interview for me so we could get to know her a little before we get started on her super adorable block – seriously!  If you want, I’m okay if you quick scroll down for a sneak peak as long as you scroll back right away to meet this fantastic motivating and inspiring woman that brings so many quilters together!


What is your crafting style?
I don't really have a style per se. I love scrappy quilts, modern designs, traditional designs and appliqué.  I love trying new techniques. Maybe, over the years, I'll develop an actual "style". I rarely ever follow another person's pattern exactly and most often add my own personal touch or changes. Many of my projects include hand dyed fabrics as they, along with batiks, are my favourites.

How did you get started creating?
I started quilting many years ago, but took a long hiatus (10 or so years) to start my own business, move to another city (Ottawa, Ontario) and explore other crafting projects (I love to crochet too!). It was the quilts in a local quilt shop's window that first attracted me to gorgeous fabrics and quilting. Now it is the fabulous quilting bloggers  and tutorials that keep me at it.
Do you have a favorite piece? Why is it your favorite? 
I have several favourites, but here's one I haven't shown lately.  This was a wedding quilt I made for a couple of dear friends that got married back in 2008.  It uses the disappearing nine patch pattern.  I'd love to make one for myself one of these days.

What is your favorite crafty blog to follow/read?
Can I say my own?  LOL, I guess not.  Really, I follow several hundred blogs so picking just one is difficult; however, I will pick Erin Russek's One Piece at a Time. I'm a huge appliqué fan and Erin has taught me so much since I started following her a couple of years ago.
Which part of the creating process do you like the most?
I like almost all, but if I had to pick just one, it's the actual piecing of the blocks. Second choice would be the final hand stitching of the binding to the back of the quilt.
Which part of the creating process do you dislike the most?
Basting and borders.  I just don't have the physical space in my apartment to baste a large quilt easily. It's always a huge production! I also dislike attaching borders ... boring!
Favorite Adhesive: Depends what I need it for. I really like June Tailor's quilt basting spray.  I also use the Lapel glue stick often for appliqué and even binding.
Beverage of Choice: Coffee for the day time or rye and diet coke for the fun time.
Sweet or Salty? - Salty!
Number 1 on your Bucket List: Well, it was get a dog, which I did last year.  Milo is almost six months old. Now on my list is travel, travel, travel .. just need the moola to do it.

Happy Tuesday everyone!  I hope this finds everyone well and super excited for the next block in our Home Sweet Home Quilt Along!   Before we get to the block, I want to introduce you to today’s designer, Melissa Dunworth of Sew BitterSweet Designs. 

What is your crafting style?
I would say that I am a quilter, but I started out as a photographer – my minor in college was studio art and I spent so much time in the dark room in college that I began to reflect light instead of absorb it!
Now I quilt and occasionally venture into other sewing projects. I love the look of vintage quilts with a modern twist. Zippers and clothes still intimidate me but I get braver with each new project.

How did you get started creating?
I grew up watching my mom sew clothes and make quilts and when my brother had his first child I knew I wanted to make her a quilt. It was a simple rail patch pattern made in all pinks and purples bought from JoAnns. The backing was fabric left over from a completely unrelated project. After that I was hooked!

Do you have a favorite piece?

This is a tough question. I have so many projects that I have loved and am proud of, but most recently it is my Twirling Around quilt. It is my first ever pattern and it is being sold exclusively at The Intrepid Thread and all proceeds are going to charity. Community Service and charity have always been important to me and being able to do that with my quilting has been the most amazing and uplifting experience.
What is your favorite crafty blog to follow/read?
I don’t think that I have a single favorite blog that I read, every day (when my 2 year old permits me to!) I go to all my friends’ blogs. I stalk everyone on Twitter and Facebook to see when they post and then go ogle their newest creations.
Which part of the creating process do you like the most? The last stitch!
Which part of the creating process do you dislike the most? Figuring out sewing math!

Some personal issues happened with the original designer of Block 8 for the Home Sweet Home Quilt Along.  Hopefully things improve soon and I’ll happily post the block once I receive it so we can all enjoy what she designed.
So, I have developed another block for the quilt.  This one is a bit wonky and modern but I think you’ll have fun with it.  I actually was inspired to make this after I made the Wonky Pound Sign Block for the Craftsy Quilt Along (which is FREE and you can still sign up for it!)
I took what I learned from the plus sign block to create this Block:

A Wonky Modern House

Fabric Requirements:

Sky (medium or light fabric – I used a fern printed aquamarine)
1 – 5” x 12.5”
1 – 1.25” x 3.5”
2 – 1.25” x 4”
2 – 1.5” x 4”
Roof Boards (I used a dark batik print)
2 – 1.5” x 12”
1 – 1.25” x 9.5”
1 – 1.25” x 3”
Grass (I used lime green daisy print)
1 – 6” x 12.5”
3 – 1.5” x 6”
2 – 1.25” x 4”
House Boards (I used Peace Pink)
2 – 1.5” x 10”
1 – 1.5” x 2.5”
1 – 1.5” x 1.5”
1 - 1.5” x 8”
1 – 1.25” x 9”
Bottom Strip (I used a batik green – this could be your grass print if you wanted)
1 - 1.25” x 12.5”

Okay – now that all the cutting’s done – let’s get started!

The Roof:

Take your 5” x 12.5” rectangle and cut diagonally through it.  When you cut – try to think of a roof shape – it doesn’t have to be perfect but you want to give yourself a little room to work with.  
Take one of your 1.5” x 12” roof strips and sew it into the cut.  Press toward the darker fabric.Since it’s at an angle you need to offset your starting edge to take into a account for that angle approximately a quarter inch or your seam allowance.  I tried to show what I mean in the above picture.  Next, cut a second random diagonal.  I did start the top right next to the edge of the roof strip to create a bit of a peak but you can see already that it’s a completely different angle than the previous one.  Take your second 1.5” strip and sew it into the cut.   
At this point Capri would ask me, “Where’s the Chimney?” so of course we must add one!
Take your 1.25” x 3” board piece and your 1.25” x 3.5” sky piece and sew together on the short edge.  Iron toward the darker side. 
Cut a slight diagonal into your roof (this could be on either side of your roof – I chose the more gradual sloping roof edge for mine.).  Sew in your 1.25” strip that you just pieced into the roof.  I made sure at least part of my chimney overlapped into the roof but I like that it’s not perfect, it just adds to the wonkiness of this block.    Trim this piece down to 12.5” x 4.5”.  If your piece is thinner than 4.5” don’t worry about it – we can add strips later to make it big enough.   Next take your 1.25” x 9.5” roof board strip and sew a 1.25” x 4” sky strip to either end.  Place it on your block so the roof so it creates an ‘overhang’ on your roof.  Sew it together and trim the sides.   

The House

Start with your 6” x 12.5” grass piece.
At about the 1/3 and 2/3 mark of your rectangle slash two random diagonals.  When you cut, know that there will be two more slashes between these two so leave enough room for that!Sew your 1.5” x 10” roof board strips into the slashes like you did for the roof boards.  Next, sew your 1.5” x 2.5” house board to the end of one of the 1.5” x 6” grass strips – this is your ‘Door Strip’   And sew a 1.5” x 6” grass strip onto each side of the 1.5” x 1.5” house board square – this is your ‘Window Strip). Take your grass rectangle and make two more random slashes in it.  Sew door and window strips into these slashes. Trim rectangle down to 12.5” x 5.5” Piece a 1.5” x 4” sky strip to each side of your 1.5” x 8” House board.  Place it so it ‘tops’ of the house you just created.  Sew the strip on and trim sides off so piece still measure 12.5” wide. Now you can sew your roof piece to your house piece. 
We still need the bottom board of our house so take your 1.25” x 9” house board strip and sew a  1.25” x 4” grass strip to either side.  Sew onto the house block.    Sew your 1.25” x 12.5” bottom strip to the bottom of your house.  Square your block to 12.5” x 12.5”.  If your house doesn’t quite measure 12.5” x 12.5” continue to add more bottom strips as needed to get your block to size.

I saw this quilt by Aneela Hoey over 9 months ago.  I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind – I just LOVE it!

So – here’s what I am proposing – a House and Tree Quilt–Along!
That’s right – a tutorial for a block with either a house or a tree (or both) in it will be posted on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s during ‘off’ weeks of Project QUILTING.  Why am I doing this to myself – I seriously LOVE this quilt and ‘house’ quilts have caught my eye for a long time.
I figure if I do this during the off weeks of Project QUILTING I should get quite a few people to join along.

To make this work I need some volunteers to design quilt blocks and make up tutorials for them.  If you have a blog – you can post your tutorial right on your own blog.  Once your post is up, I’ll link the block from my website to yours and include a mini bio about you, the designer.  If you don’t have your own blog, just send me a word file with the instructions and photo’s and I’ll post it on my blog with links to you and of course a mini bio about you, the designer.

I talked to Aneela Hooey about my idea since her quilt was my inspiration.  She thought it was a great idea but has too many obligations this year to participate.  BUT she did give me a link to a house and tree tutorial on her blog so you can always start with those and work your own design off there. 

The block you design should be 12.5” x 12.5” (so it’s a finished 12” square). 
It has to have a house, a tree, or both incorporated somehow into the block but feel free to add other elements as well (see above inspiration quilt).

It only took me 8 months but I’ve finally started quilting the table runners I made from the Blogger’s Block-A-Palooza Quilt Along.  I was going to quilt the runner with just a random, all over design but once I let it sit in my mind for awhile I decided it would be fun to do some ‘practice’ quilting on each block.  Also – each block really does call for a different design. 
Runner #4:  Block 16, Block 8, Block 9

  Block 16 - Pinwheel Parade – I decided to go with a fun swirl quilting on this block.  The middle row actually uncurls onto each of the side blocks.  It’s sort of hard to see in the picture but it created a really cool effect.
Block 9 – Lemonade Stand – This block already had plenty going on with it so I just did some ‘wavy’ straight lines throughout the block.
  Finished and bound!  Now that was fun!

Hi! I am happy to be sharing with you a block that I designed as part of a 36 block quilt along. It’s fun, easy to make and I hope you enjoy it!

I’ll start with a little background on the Celebrate Christmas Quilt Along. On Quilting Gallery's site every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for 12 weeks straight you will find one new designer with a new block and full instructions on how to make that block. All Wrapped Up

Fabric/Cuting Instructions:

I used a fat quarter set of Jason Yenter's Holiday line for In the Beginning Fabrics. Wintergraphix that I purchased from FabricFascination. I just LOVE this fabric and have been itching to try it out on something! This was just perfect!

1 - 12.5” square of Fabric 1

4 – 1.5” x 18” strips of Fabric 2

2 – 1.25” x 18” strips of Fabric 3

Step 1. Sew a strip of Fabric 2 to a strip of Fabric 3. Press towards Fabric 3.

Step 2. Sew a second strip of Fabric 2 to the other side of Fabric 3 (sandwiching fabric 3 between 2 strips of fabric 2). Press towards Fabric 3.

Step 3. Repeat this with the remaining strips of fabric.

Step 4. Take your 12.5” square of Fabric 1. Cut a wonky diagonal somewhere through the approximate middle portion of the fabric.

Now, it doesn’t really matter were – just make sure to be at least 2 inches from either corner.

Step 5. Sew your strip onto the left diagonal. Press towards Fabric 1. Leave a good portion of your 18” triple strip on the top and bottom of the square. It will help later when you need to square things up.

Step 6. Sew your strip onto the right diagonal. Press towards Fabric 1. Step 7. Turn your fabric and cut another randomly wonky diagonal through the fabric.

Step 8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 in this direction.

Step 9. Square your piece up to a 12.5” square. I also did this ‘wonkily’.The Finished BLOCK! All Wrapped Up! In this picture you can see that I always pressed towards the darker fabric.

This is my first ‘block tutorial’ and I realized after the first block that I didn’t take enough step by step pictures along the way. So, I ended up having two blocks by the time I was done! I think with a few more I’ll have a nice table runner or table topper perfect for the holidays!

Campaign Highlights

• Start: September 13, 2011
• End: December 1, 2011
• Length: 12 weeks
• 36 designers creating 12" blocks for quilters to make.
• Designer profiles, their blocks and a Super Deal for Quilters will be featured each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
• Quilters can complete the blocks and upload to our Flickr group to share their creations and for a chance to win hand-painted Buttons from Incomparable Buttons.
• Completed quilts and projects made with the quilt-along blocks will be featured in next January’s Weekly Quilt Contests.
