Project Quilting - How I Judge

First I want to say that I am amazed at all the wonderful entries for the Apple Blossom Challenge. It makes our job as judges really tough.

Some questions have come up about what criteria we use to judge. When Kim and I first talked about Project Quilting, my first thought was to ask the public voters to rate each quilt with a number score. That would help to take the "popularity" factor out of the public vote and we could use it for a portion of the final score to determine one winner for each challenge. But the logistics were too difficult, so we ended up with a public vote winner and a judges winner instead.

Then I thought about how the judges voting should be done. I kicked around the idea of having different categories with their own scores....originality, use of the theme, etc, but decided in the end that each judge should have the right to decide how important all these things are. So each judge does a simple 1-10 score for each participant. It's totally up to each judge how that score is determined. I can tell you that I, personally, want to see something that shows your creativity and originality. I hope you'll all stretch the limits of what you've done before. Project Quilting....It's Time to Think Outside the Square.

Good luck to all of you. I'm looking forward to Season 1.

Kim, a question about the two 1/2 yd cuts. Can that be of the same fabric or does it have to be two different fabrics?

I'll forward your question onto my MIL...

It can be the same.

Thanks, Kim. I didn't want to have to buy more fabric if I could use what I had. It's all cut up into strips, so It won't be used in a whole 1 yd piece. I'm using some fabrics for my rectangles that have been in my stash and I couldn't decide what to do with them. This challenge was perfect for them.
